Free Fruit and Vegetables Program
Thursday, October 01, 2009

Governor Phil Bredesen, Senator Lowe Finney, Representative Jimmy Eldridge, Representative Johnny Shaw and Education Commissioner Timothy Webb today announced Arlington International Leadership School will offer free fruits and vegetables to students this school year due to a federal grant. The Fresh Fruits and Vegetables program aims to increase student consumption of fresh or fruits and vegetables.

"I applaud each of these schools for continuing to find new ways to provide healthy alternatives for our students," Gov. Bredesen said. "Our schools continue to do more to encourage healthy habits in our children through school nutrition programs and coordinated school health partnerships in every district and these grants will enhance that effort."

The grants are provided through the United States Department of Agriculture. Schools submitted applications to be considered and were selected based on factors such as staff commitment, efficient use of resources and innovative promotional efforts. Schools with the greatest percentage economically disadvantaged students were given the highest level of consideration.

"A healthy meal can be the fuel a child needs for learning throughout the day," Sen. Finney said. "These grants are a great way to provide fresh foods and teach our kids good eating habits."

The grant will allow schools to provide approved fruits and vegetables at no charge to students during the school day. For example, fruits and vegetables must be fresh, not canned or frozen, or vacuum packed.

"Providing our students with nutritious meal options is a great way to instill healthy eating habits at an early age," Rep. Shaw said. "I'm excited that our schools chose to participate and continue supporting the children of our district."

"Good nutrition is the foundation of a good education and I'm pleased to know our students will have access to fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day," Rep. Eldridge said.

To Kick-Off this special program Arlington International Leadership School had a special watermelon cutting for all Pre-K and Kindergarten students.  Students and guest were served watermelon and broccoli.  Special guest included Mayor Jerry Gist and the "Great Banana."
